Josh Garrels - “White Owl”

This song is amazing. The key change in and out of each chorus is completely unexpected, but a glorious surprise when it washes over you.

This track is from his latest album, Love & War & The Sea in Between, which you can download for free on NoiseTrade. Get it.

Over the Rhine - “My Funny Valentine”

Mmmmmm. Gershwin + Karen Berquist’s voice = Heaven.

Enough said.

I’m a sucker for any song that switches to a 5/4 time signature.

Over the Rhine - “I Want You To Be My Love”

The instrumentation is crisp and clear, the lyrics simple but full of romance. Some songs are absolutely perfect.

Exhibit A.

The emotional tension in this song almost knocks the wind out of me.

Jamie Cullum - “Don’t Stop The Music” (Rihanna cover)

Jamie Cullum can cover anything. I really don’t care if you don’t think it does justice to the subject matter, the guy is a better musician than you. On his twentysomething he looked at Jeff Buckley and said “I could do like him and cover Hallelujah, or I could just cover one of his songs” and then he did the latter and everyone in the world was saved from another Hallelujah cover. Here he tackles Rihanna. Tackle isn’t really the right word, because this is the smoothest thing in the world. The second time he hits that chorus, Cullum soars through it, leaving Rihanna’s original far behind. Get this, love it, and get over the fact that it’s a cover.

A friend and budding music critic puts together quarterly mixtapes of all his current favorites. The description is his.
